SOUTH POINT — The offense was on fire. The defense was burning a little of its own.

The South Point Pointers got a strong performance on both ends of the court as they routed the River Valley Raiders 82-40 Tuesday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

The Pointers shot better than 50 percent as a team and had six players in double figures.

Bandon Barnes scored 17 points including 14 in the first half. Kyle Winkler, Tevin Mitchell and Blake Barnes scored 14 each, Mike Leighty 11 and Austin Jeffreys 10.

Blake Barnes also had 10 assists and three steals, Winkler had four assists and Leighty grabbed seven rebounds.

Winkler was 6 of 8 from the field, Blake and Brandon Barnes each 6 of 9, Mitchell 5 of 9 and Jeffreys 4 of 6.

“We started 2 for 21 up there but today we shot the lights out of it,” said Pointers’ coach Chris Barnes.

“Everybody shot over 50 percent. When you’ve got five guys in double digits, that’s pretty good no matter who you are playing.”

Avenging a 61-59 loss earlier this season when they scored just five points in the first quarter, the Pointers took a 20-10 lead in the first quarter as Brandon Barnes hit three treys and Blake Barnes scored six.

Winkler had eight points in the second quarter as the Pointers pulled away to a 42-18 halftime lead.

Coach Barnes also gave credit to the defense as well as the team committing just seven turnovers for the game.

“That was by far our best defensive effort after the year. That’s the way we have to play being as small as we are. We have to get out and defend the passing lanes,” said coach Barnes.

Jeffreys scored eight of his points in the third quarter as the Pointers built an insurmountable 70-30 lead.

“That was by far our best defensive effort after the year. That’s the way we have to play being as small as we are. We have to get out and defend the passing lanes.

Dominique Peck scored 14 to lead River Valley (5-8, 2-3).
